Welcome to our comprehensive guide to Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) training programs. Whether you are seeking to enhance your skills, switch careers, or re-enter the workforce, WIOA provides a pathway to success.

What is WIOA?
The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) is a federal program designed to help job seekers access employment, education, training, and support services to succeed in the labor market.

Training Services:

  1. Career Counseling and Assessment: Receive personalized career guidance and assessments to identify your strengths, interests, and career goals in our High-Demand Industries.

  2. Occupational Skills Training: Access training programs tailored to high-demand industries such as business and office administration; security and law enforcement; information technology; education, and more.

  3. Earn and Learn: Participate in programs such as apprenticeships, work experience, and on-the-job training to earn while you learn in industries like construction; transportation, infrastructure, and utilities; hospitality, retail, and entertainment; healthcare, and others.

  4. Support Services: Receive assistance with transportation, childcare, work attire, and other supportive services to help you focus on your training and employment goals.

How to Apply:

  1. Find Your Local American Job Center: Visit your nearest American Job Center (AJC) at the DC Department of Employment Services to access WIOA services. The following American Job Centers now open for in-person services by appointment only (click on the location nearest to you for an appointment):

  2. Meet with a Workforce Development Specialist: During your meeting, you will discuss your career goals, assess your eligibility for WIOA programs, and develop a personalized career plan.

  3. Complete the Application Process: Work with your Workforce Development Specialist to complete the WIOA application process. This may include providing documentation of your eligibility, participating in assessments, and selecting a suitable training program.

  4. Start Your Training: Once approved for WIOA services, begin your training program and take advantage of additional support services to help you succeed.

What are Career Pathway Maps?
Career pathway maps are tools that help individuals explore available opportunities in the District’s high-demand sectors; they also serve as a tool for professionals in education, workforce development, and human resources, as they support job seekers and employees in choosing among the opportunities that interest them. The career pathway maps include information about credentials, labor market value, and wages relevant to the local context. 

Individual Training Account (ITA)
As Job seekers, you can learn about how to obtain an Individual Training Account (ITA) through the Department of Employment Services. ITAs are a financial resource to help pay for training programs that lead to industry-recognized credentials and employment in high-demand fields.
