DC WIC Celebrates National Workforce Development Month by Recognizing Local Workforce Champions and Partnering in National “Ready To Work” Initiative

(Washington, DC) – The DC Workforce Investment Council, the District’s business-led workforce board, has partnered with Indeed to host a three-day Ready to Work event for job seekers, September 22 – September 24, at Dock5 at Union Market. The event is part of a nationwide initiative led by a coalition of businesses, nonprofits, and civic partners dedicated to providing talent with the resources they need for a successful job search. Indeed, along with Glassdoor, Lyft, Goodwill, Dunkin’, the Markle Foundation’s Rework America Alliance, Care.com, and more, will provide live programming and job seeker support. In addition, Mayor Muriel Bowser has issued a proclamation marking September 2022 as “Workforce Development Professionals Month” in Washington, DC.

“We are excited to partner with Indeed, the Markle Foundation, and others to connect District residents to jobs and career resources,” said Ahnna Smith, Executive Director of the DC WIC. “We know that there is limitless potential in our community, but that it isn’t always easy to explore and connect to new career opportunities. By combining the local investments that Mayor Bowser has made in career coaching, education, and training, with the tools and scale of Indeed, we are showing our residents that we believe in their potential and are ready to support them to achieve it.”

The event brings together national and local resources for DC job seekers, including Career Coach DC, launched this year by Mayor Bowser through a $4.6 million investment. The Career Coach DC program offers career assessment, personalized coaching, and supports that connect DC residents to education, training, and employment opportunities. Career Coach DC is free for DC residents 18 years and older who have not yet completed a 4-year college degree, or those who are low- or moderate-income. The Career Coach DC program is funded to support up to 5,000 DC residents annually over the next two years. Residents can connect with Career Coach DC and sign-up for virtual, in-person, or hybrid services by registering online at careercoach.dc.gov, by calling 202-989-1002, or by emailing [email protected].

“Economic uncertainty and inflation have many job seekers worried about their future. To help, we are proud to partner with several other organizations to bring Ready to Work to thousands of people in hopes of finding them better work faster,” said Scott Bonneau, Indeed VP of Global Talent Attraction. “In today’s U.S. labor market there is one person for every two job openings. While job seekers remain in the driver’s seat, we know the job search process can feel like a full-time job in itself. We hope to match the right job seekers with the right employers, and quickly, by providing support, resources, tools, and access to interviews with employers.”

“We’re pleased to be working with the team at the DC Workforce Investment Council to further our goal to help the millions of people in the U.S. who are struggling to move out of low-paying jobs into better roles,” said Beth Cobert, Chief Operating Officer, Markle Foundation. “Events like Indeed’s Ready-to-Work initiative and increased access to career coaching services, such as those provided by Career Coach DC, can help more people to move into the jobs they want.”

Ready to Work event attendees will also have access to other workforce development resources and services including interview and resume prep, assistance with hiring, training, and coaching to help make the job search simpler and faster. These resources, along with hundreds of thousands of job postings, and other job seeker benefits like free transportation from Lyft, live in Ready to Work’s national hub.
